One Week in Sicily
Let me preface this article first by saying 1 week in Sicily is not enough time to explore this incredible island. I spent 10 days here for my honeymoon and still felt like I only scratched the surface of everything there was to explore. However, if you’re pressed for time and don’t have more than one week in Sicily, here’s my itinerary for an incredible first trip to Sicily focusing on the East side of the island.
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean, weaves together a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. In charming towns like Taormina and Noto, ancient ruins and Baroque architecture stand as testaments to Sicily's diverse heritage. On the slopes of Mount Etna, renowned wineries flourish in volcanic soil, producing distinctive wines celebrated globally. Agrigento's Valley of the Temples showcases majestic Greek ruins, underscoring Sicily's pivotal role in ancient civilizations. Sicilian cuisine, a fusion of Mediterranean flavors, features iconic dishes such as arancini and cannoli, reflecting centuries of cultural exchange. This dynamic blend of influences—from Phoenician to Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and Spanish—creates a captivating mosaic of history, gastronomy, and scenic splendor on the island.
If you have more, time ask me about a 10-day or 2-week itinerary, including exploring the rest of the island, including sites such as Agrigento, Palermo, and other top West side gems on Sicily.
Days 1-4: Taormina
Day 1: Explore Taormina
Morning: Visit the ancient Greek Theatre of Taormina, an iconic amphitheatre with stunning views of Mount Etna and the coast.
Afternoon: Wander through the historic center of Taormina, exploring its charming streets, shops, and cafes. Don't miss the Corso Umberto, the main street lined with boutiques and gelaterias.
Evening: Enjoy a leisurely dinner at a local trattoria, savoring Sicilian cuisine and perhaps catching a performance at the Greek Theatre if available.
Day 2: Winery Tastings on Mount Etna
Morning: Take a scenic drive to Mount Etna, Europe's highest and most active volcano. Visit a local winery on the slopes of Etna for a tour and tasting session, learning about the unique viticulture of the region.
Afternoon: Explore more wineries or choose to hike partway up Mount Etna (weather permitting) for panoramic views of the volcanic landscape.
Evening: Return to Taormina for dinner or enjoy a meal at one of the mountain villages near Etna, known for their rustic Sicilian dishes.
Day 3: Beach or Pool Day
After a few days of sites and exploration, have a relaxing day enjoying one of Sicily's beautiful beaches or at your hotel's pool. Consider visiting the beaches of Isola Bella or Giardini Naxos, known for their crystal-clear waters and scenic views.
Alternatively, take a boat trip along the coast to discover secluded coves and beaches.
Day 4: Departure or Optional Activities
Morning: Depending on your departure time, you may have a leisurely breakfast and some last-minute shopping in Taormina.
Alternatively, if time permits, visit nearby attractions like Castelmola, a picturesque hilltop village overlooking Taormina, or explore more of the island before departing.

Mid-Morning: Stop by Caffè Sicilia, renowned for its almond granita and other delicious Sicilian treats. I loved this Caffe so much we went for a second breakfast every morning we were there.
Afternoon: Continue exploring Noto, visiting attractions like Palazzo Nicolaci Villadorata and the Church of Santa Chiara. Take time to wander through the picturesque streets and absorb the town's cultural ambiance.
Evening: Dine at a traditional trattoria in Noto, savoring Sicilian specialties and perhaps sampling local wines like Nero d'Avola or Cerasuolo di Vittoria.
Day 6: Explore Siracusa and Ortigia
Morning: Drive to Siracusa, a city rich in history and ancient ruins. Visit the archaeological park of Neapolis to see the Greek Theatre, Roman Amphitheatre, and the Ear of Dionysius cave.
Midday: Explore the charming island of Ortigia, Siracusa's historical center. Walk through its narrow streets lined with Baroque buildings, visit the Cathedral of Siracusa, and browse local markets.

Midday: Head to Modica, famous for its Baroque architecture and chocolate-making tradition. Visit a chocolate factory to learn about and sample Modica's unique chocolate.
Afternoon: Explore Modica's historic center, including the Cathedral of San Giorgio and Palazzo Polara. Enjoy panoramic views of the town from various vantage points.
Evening: Return to Noto for a farewell dinner. The next morning, make your way to Catania to fly back to reality.
